[audio]Against Heresies (Book I) - St. Irenaeus of Lyons
The classic 2nd century study and analysis of Christian Gnosticism in all its extant variants, as collected both from Gnostic writings and discussions with Gnostic teachers (as well as ex-Gnostics). Since Irenaeus was studying Gnosticism to help others change Gnostics' minds, he strove for as much accuracy as possible in his account. And in fact, you will find that his account of Gnosticism tallies closely with that of the recently rediscovered Gnostic writings...

[audio]Europe and the Faith - Hilaire Belloc
A broad popular survey of European history, emphasizing Europe's continuity of civilization from the days of the Roman Empire to the present day, as well as the importance of the Catholic Church to European history and life. This is Belloc at his quirkiest. His hatred of corporation capitalism and his love of diversity in unity are both on display, as he argues for the proposition that the Roman Empire never really fell...

[audio]Pastoral Care (The Book of Pastoral Rule) - St. Gregory the Great
This is _the_ medieval management book, written by the pope who set up the Catholic Church to survive the Dark Ages. It was written for bishops and read by huge numbers of European lay leaders as well as church ones. This is the book that King Alfred so wanted to spread around that he had it translated into English. This is a book that still has important lessons today. The first part considers what sort of person you ought to have in charge and what sort not, as well as good and bad reasons for...

[audio]The Dialogue of St. Catherine of Siena, Part 2 - St. Catherine of Siena
A dialogue between Catherine and God the Father. The second part of the book, "A Treatise on Discretion", discusses how all good things must be done with discretion, which is part of love; how Christ is like a bridge; how virtues and good works should not be done out of fear or as an end in themselves, but out of love; and how the soul should learn to love God unconditionally as a friend and adopted child, not just for God's good gifts...

[audio]The Letters of St. Ignatius of Antioch - St. Ignatius of Antioch
On his way to martyrdom in Rome, Bishop Ignatius of Antioch (then in Syria; now Antakya, Turkey) wrote letters to the Church in several cities of the Empire. Seven of these letters survive. By the way, you'll notice that the good bishop is not shy about calling Jesus "God". (So much for that Da Vinci Code silliness....)

[audio]St. Polycarp's Letter to the Philippians - St. Polycarp
Bishop Polycarp of Smyrna writes to the Church in Philippi. At their request, the subject is righteousness and righteous living. Apparently, this letter was written either shortly before or after St. Ignatius of Antioch's martyrdom, as the Philippians are anxious to read Ignatius' letters and Polycarp is anxious to hear tidings of Ignatius. Way before the Council of Nicaea, though; so listen and find out what Christianity was like towards the end of its first century!

[audio]The Ascent of Mount Carmel - St. John of the Cross
The spiritual classic about dark nights of the soul, and how to start to achieve union with God through prayer, begins with a look at the "night of sense". The second book deals with the "night of faith". Then the third book deals with the "night of the memory and will". The final two books of the five book treatise are generally printed separately and called The Dark Night of the Soul. So I have also recorded them separately.

[audio]Treatise III: On the Lapsed - St. Cyprian of Carthage
After a period of Imperial persecution, the Bishop of Carthage writes to his flock about those people who didn't stand up to it, but readily agreed to sacrifice to the Emperor and the gods. He urges these people to repent, confess their sins, and do penance. He also denounces those who provide the lapsed with invalid forms of reconciliation with the Church or tell them that their sins aren't serious, thus endangering the souls of the lapsed...

[audio]The Purgatory of St. Patrick - Pedro Calderon de la Barca
From the Golden Age of Spanish drama, this play is based on the legend of St. Patrick's Purgatory, a famous pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. It also references the Irish-origin legends about St. Patrick. Translated into English in the same verse meters as the original, and very well done, too.
